Google announced plans to expand its Gemini AI assistant across a wider range of devices, including tablets, smartwatches, headphones, and Android-powered in-car infotainment systems.

    Gemini Expansion Key Takeaways

    Highlights

Device Ecosystem Expansion: Google plans to roll out Gemini AI to tablets, smartwatches, headphones, Android Auto systems, and older Android phones—beyond its current smartphone focus.
Assistant Transition: Gemini is set to replace Google Assistant on newer and legacy Android devices first, before branching out to non-mobile form factors.
Gemini Live Widens Access: Camera and screen-sharing features, once limited to Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25, are now available on all compatible Android devices (Advanced subscription required for full features).
Introducing Gemini 2.5 Pro: The latest model, available to Advanced subscribers, offers enhanced reasoning, coding, math, and science performance via Google AI Studio and the Gemini app.
Deep Platform Integration: With Gemini embedded across 15 Google products, the AI assistant already reaches over 500 million users—and soon will span an even broader hardware lineup.
Future Innovations: Google is developing Gemini-powered AI glasses with memory capabilities and robotics models, signaling its ambition to populate emerging device categories.

CEO Sundar Pichai shared the update during Google’s Q1 2025 earnings call, indicating a broader strategy to integrate Gemini beyond smartphones and throughout the company’s ecosystem.

Currently, Google’s primary focus is on replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on compatible mobile devices. This transition began last year when newer Android smartphones started shipping with Gemini as the default voice assistant.

The company now intends to bring Gemini to older Android models as well, aiming for broader compatibility across its mobile user base. Following this phase, attention will shift toward expanding Gemini to other platforms, such as wearables, tablets, and vehicles.

Pichai noted that Gemini models have already been embedded into all 15 of Google’s platform-based products, reaching over half a billion users.

However, no specific timeline was provided regarding when non-mobile devices would receive the Gemini update or which models would be prioritized. The announcement suggests a gradual transition away from Google Assistant across all hardware categories.

    Expansion Timeline and Device Integration

Google’s initial focus remains on mobile devices, with plans to upgrade Google Assistant to Gemini across Android smartphones first. Later this year, the company aims to extend Gemini to other platforms, including tablets, vehicles, headphones, and smartwatches.

Gemini Live Features Now Available to More Users

Previously exclusive to the Pixel 9 series and Samsung Galaxy S25 series, the Gemini Live feature—which enables camera access and screen sharing—is now being rolled out to all Android users.

While these capabilities enhance real-time interaction with the AI assistant, full access to Gemini Live requires an active Gemini Advanced subscription.

    Advancements with Gemini 2.5 Pro

Google also introduced Gemini 2.5 Pro, the latest version of its AI model, which demonstrates improvements in reasoning, coding, math, and science tasks.

This model is available to users with a Gemini Advanced subscription through Google AI Studio and the Gemini app. The enhancements in Gemini 2.5 Pro highlight Google’s continued investment in refining AI performance across its services.

    Gemini AI’s Broader Ecosystem Integration

With Gemini models now active across 15 of Google’s major platforms, the AI assistant has reached a user base exceeding 500 million.

This widespread adoption reflects Google’s approach to embedding AI functionalities deeper into its products to enhance user experiences across different devices and services.

    AI Glasses and Robotics

Pichai briefly mentioned ongoing work on Gemini-powered AI glasses featuring memory capabilities, though no detailed timelines or specifications were provided.

Additionally, Google is developing Gemini-based robotics models, indicating a broader ambition to apply AI to emerging technology sectors.

As Google advances its AI initiatives, the expansion of Gemini across multiple device categories marks a strategic shift toward building a unified, AI-driven ecosystem designed to offer consistent and enhanced user experiences across hardware form factors.
