Google has launched a new features for NotebookLM, its AI-powered note-taking platform, enhancing organization and accessibility.
Highlights
The key additions include Mind Maps, which generate interactive flowcharts to help users visualize connections between concepts, and an Output Language Selector, allowing responses in the user’s preferred language.
Mind Maps
The Mind Maps feature provides a structured way to explore complex information. When users upload documents or notes, NotebookLM can automatically create a visual representation of key concepts, displaying them in a branch-style diagram.
This approach helps users understand relationships between topics and navigate information more efficiently.
Initially available only to Workspace account holders, Mind Maps have now been rolled out to all users. Generating a Mind Map takes about 20 seconds, and once created, it appears as a full-screen pop-up.
Users can zoom in and out, expand or collapse branches, and click on specific concepts to receive additional context from the AI assistant. NotebookLM cites original sources, ensuring transparency in AI-generated insights.
Features of Mind Maps
- Dynamic Visualization: Users can interact with the diagram, expanding or collapsing sections to focus on specific areas.
- AI-Powered Contextual Responses: Clicking on a concept prompts the AI assistant to provide further explanations, sourced from uploaded documents.
- Collaboration Options: Mind Maps can be shared by downloading the visualization or sharing the entire notebook with collaborators.
Output Language Selector
Google has also introduced an Output Language Selector, accessible via Settings > Output Language.
This feature enables users to generate AI responses in their preferred language, even when working with documents in a different language. It is particularly useful for students, researchers, and professionals dealing with multilingual content.
Aspects of the Output Language Selector
- Users can create study guides, briefing documents, and chatbot responses in various languages.
- The system currently supports over 200 languages, including Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, and Bengali.
- While AI Overviews remain limited to English, users can still manually prompt NotebookLM to translate content.
AI Productivity Tools
These enhancements come as NotebookLM becomes part of the Google One AI Premium subscription, making AI-powered note-taking and knowledge management more accessible to premium users.
