WhatsApp is reportedly working on a redesigned Meta AI interface for Android, introducing new ways for users to interact with the AI chatbot.
Highlights
The update is expected to feature an automatic voice mode and prompt suggestions to facilitate smoother conversations. While these enhancements are still in development and unavailable to beta testers, the redesign appears to be part of Meta’s broader AI strategy.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently stated that Meta AI would receive significant upgrades in 2025, indicating a larger roadmap for AI integration across Meta’s platforms.
Redesigned Meta AI Interface for Android
According to WABetaInfo, the redesigned interface was identified in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.25.5.22).
Since it remains in development, beta testers cannot access it yet. Shared screenshots suggest that users will be able to long-press the Meta AI icon at the bottom-right corner of the chat screen to open the chatbot in a new interface.
This action will automatically activate voice mode, allowing users to interact with the AI hands-free.
Unlike the current chat-based interaction, the updated interface will prominently display the chatbot logo with the word “listening” underneath, indicating that the AI is actively awaiting input.
To enhance transparency, Android’s status bar will show a green microphone icon when the AI is listening. Users can switch from voice to text mode by tapping the microphone button or typing in the text field.
Automatic Voice Mode and Prompt Suggestions
The introduction of automatic voice mode is designed to make AI interactions more intuitive and efficient. By holding down the Meta AI icon, users can immediately start voice-based conversations without needing to manually enable the feature.
WhatsApp is incorporating prompt suggestions to help users initiate AI-driven conversations, providing guidance for a more seamless experience.
AI Integration With Home Screen Access
WhatsApp is also exploring ways to enhance AI accessibility. The redesigned Meta AI interface is expected to include a home screen widget, allowing users to quickly initiate conversations or use the camera to send photos for instant analysis.
This feature aims to streamline AI interactions by reducing the steps needed to engage with the chatbot.
User Control and Privacy Measures
To address privacy concerns, WhatsApp has implemented measures to ensure that Meta AI only listens while the dedicated interface is open.
Once the user exits the interface, the listening session automatically ends, preventing unintended microphone access. The presence of a green microphone icon in the status bar further informs users when the AI is actively listening.
Development Status and Expected Release
At this stage, the redesigned Meta AI interface is still under development, and WhatsApp has not provided an official timeline for its release.
While the features are not yet available to beta testers, future updates are expected to bring these enhancements to users.
