Apple Rolls Out iOS 18.6 With Major Changes for EU Users and Critical Security Fixes

Apple has released iOS 18.6 for iPhone users, introducing a set of meaningful updates that go beyond routine performance enhancements.

    Highlights

    • EU Compliance Overhaul: Apple introduces a redesigned installation flow for alternative app marketplaces, aligned with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).
    • Geo-Fenced Access: Features are exclusive to EU Apple ID holders physically in the region, with access revoked 30 days after departure.
    • Developer APIs Coming Soon: A new API will allow developers to trigger external app downloads from within existing apps later this year.
    • Over 20 Security Fixes: Includes patches for WebKit issues that could cause spoofing, crashes, and memory corruption.
    • Privacy Restored: Bug fixes for Memory Movies sharing and a VoiceOver issue that exposed passcodes enhance user safety.
    • Wider Regulatory Implications: Changes in the EU may set the tone for upcoming UK rules and global regulatory alignment.
    • End of the iOS 18 Cycle: As iOS 26 nears, this may be the final major iOS 18 update, emphasizing privacy and platform stability.
    • Installation Available Now: iPhone XS and newer users can update via Settings > General > Software Update.

This latest version includes key regulatory-driven changes for users in the European Union, as well as important security patches and bug fixes for all compatible devices.

    EU Compliance

A central feature of iOS 18.6 is the redesigned installation flow for alternative app marketplaces and web-distributed apps.

Exclusive to users in the European Union, this change aligns with Apple’s ongoing compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The update refines how EU users install apps from developers’ websites or third-party marketplaces, offering a more streamlined and transparent experience.

These options remain restricted to users whose Apple ID region is set to an EU country and who are physically located within the bloc. If a user leaves the EU, access to these features is revoked after 30 days, although Apple provides a grace period before disabling the functionality.

    Developer Tools Coming Soon

In addition to UI and compliance updates, Apple has laid the foundation for future developer tools.

Later this year, the company plans to introduce a new API that will allow developers to initiate downloads of their own apps (distributed outside the App Store) from within apps that have already been installed.

Returning users downloading from the same developer’s website will also encounter a slightly revised flow, aimed at simplifying the reinstallation process.

    Security

iOS 18.6 addresses over 20 security vulnerabilities, with significant attention given to the WebKit engine that powers Safari and other browser-related functions.

Eight of these vulnerabilities could have allowed address bar spoofing, unexpected crashes, memory corruption, denial-of-service attacks, or leakage of sensitive user data.

One notable fix resolves an issue in the Photos app where Memory Movies were being shared inadvertently—restoring expected privacy safeguards. Another patch addresses an accessibility bug where VoiceOver could potentially read aloud a user’s passcode, presenting a privacy risk.

These security enhancements are especially important for users who frequently rely on Safari, third-party browsers, or any web-based apps.

    European Adoption

Apple’s compliance with EU regulations also comes amid increasing scrutiny in other regions. In the UK, for example, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is drafting rules that may demand greater flexibility in app distribution and fee structures from both Apple and Google.

The European Commission has acknowledged Apple’s efforts to meet DMA obligations, which include offering third-party payment options and broader app distribution paths.

As part of its longer-term plan, Apple is expected to transition to a new Core Technology Commission model by 2026, which will replace the current external app distribution fees.

As Apple prepares to launch iOS 26 alongside the expected iPhone 17 series this September, iOS 18.6 may be among the last updates in the current cycle.

Users with an iPhone XS or newer are encouraged to update by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update and selecting Install Now.
