Framework, known for its modular and repairable laptops, has introduced its first small-form-factor desktop PC.

Designed for both high-performance gaming and AI computing, the Framework Desktop features AMD’s latest Strix Halo architecture in a compact 4.5L chassis.

With a modular design, customizable front panel, and a focus on efficiency, the system aims to offer a balance between power and portability.

    AMD Ryzen AI Max Series

At the core of the Framework Desktop is AMD’s Ryzen AI Max series, an integrated processing unit that eliminates the need for a dedicated GPU. Users can choose between two configurations:

Specification Ryzen AI Max 385 Ryzen AI Max+ 395
CPU Cores 8 Cores 16 Cores
Graphics Cores 32 Cores 40 Cores
Cache Size 40 MB 80 MB
    Price $1,099 $1,999

This combination provides competitive graphical performance, making it suitable for gaming and AI tasks while maintaining a compact design.

    Compact Yet Expandable Design

Despite its small size, the Framework Desktop offers expandability and customization options. The system supports up to two M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots, allowing for high-speed storage expansion.

Framework’s modular expansion system lets users swap ports, with options such as USB-C, USB-A, a headphone jack, an SD card reader, and storage expansion cards.

One of the trade-offs in this design is the use of soldered LPDDR5x RAM (ranging from 32GB to 128GB), which prevents future memory upgrades. However, this decision was made to maximize memory bandwidth (256GB/s), benefiting AI workloads and gaming performance.

    Optimized for AI Computing

Beyond gaming, the Framework Desktop is built for AI tasks. The system can run large language models such as Llama 3.3 70B, Mistral, Nous Hermes, and DeepSeek. Framework demonstrated a multi-unit rack setup, showcasing how multiple devices can work in parallel for AI model testing.

    Gaming Without a Dedicated GPU

The Radeon 8060S GPU within the Ryzen AI Max processors allows for 1440p gaming on high settings without requiring a discrete graphics card.

During its launch event, Framework showcased smooth gameplay in titles like Elden Ring, suggesting strong performance optimizations for integrated graphics.

    Customization and Modular Upgrades

Unlike many small-form-factor PCs, the Framework Desktop retains a high degree of customization:

    • PCIe x4 slot for additional expansion.
    • Semi-custom 400W Flex ATX power supply.
    • Wi-Fi 7 support via the RZ717 module.
    • Interchangeable front panels, allowing users to personalize the look of their system.

    Comparison with Apple’s Mac Studio

During its product reveal, Framework positioned its top-tier Ryzen AI Max+ 395 model as an affordable alternative to Apple’s Mac Studio.

The company noted that its system, when similarly configured, costs over $2,000 less than the Mac Studio, making it a potential option for professionals in AI, machine learning, and content creation.

    Pricing and Availability

Pre-orders for the Framework Desktop are now open, with shipments expected in Q3 2025. The pricing structure includes:

    • Base model ($1,099) – Ryzen AI Max 385, 32GB RAM, 512GB storage.
    • Top-tier model ($1,999) – Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 128GB RAM, expanded storage options.

A New Approach to Compact Performance PCs

The Framework Desktop represents a shift in the small-form-factor PC market, offering a mix of gaming performance, AI computing capabilities, and modular expandability.

While the non-upgradable RAM may be a drawback for some users, the system’s power-to-size ratio makes it a compelling choice for those seeking a compact yet capable desktop solution.
