Google App Prepares New Shortcut Ahead of Rumored ‘AI Mode’

Google is reportedly making significant updates to its search experience, as recent findings suggest it is testing a new AI mode.

A teardown of the latest Google app beta (version 16.6.23) has revealed a new shortcut, possibly linked to an upcoming AI-driven interface.

While Google has not confirmed the details, evidence suggests that the company is working on a redesigned home screen layout with an updated icon that may serve as an entry point for the AI mode.

New Shortcut and ‘Search Live’ Feature in Testing

The beta version of the Google app introduces a waveform-shaped icon, distinct from existing shortcuts for translate, homework, and music search.

This icon features two additional lines compared to the Gemini Live icon, leading to speculation that it may be associated with a feature called “Search Live.”

Code references suggest that Search Live could facilitate real-time, two-way voice interactions, though its exact functionality remains unclear. Some reports indicate that “Search Live” may be an internal codename rather than the final branding for the AI mode.

The findings also suggest that Google might be reorganizing its search interface, potentially phasing out the four buttons currently used for Google Lens’ camera features.

Screenshots from the beta version indicate that the home screen layout is being refined, possibly to integrate AI-driven interactions more seamlessly. Since these features remain in development, beta testers currently do not have access to them.

    Google’s AI Mode

Google appears to be expanding its AI integration beyond simple search enhancements, aiming to create a more interactive and intuitive search experience.

The rumored AI Mode is expected to handle open-ended queries, allowing users to engage in a back-and-forth conversation rather than just receiving static search results.

Unlike AI Overviews, which summarize existing web content, AI Mode would allow users to refine responses through follow-up questions.

A shortcut for AI Mode is expected to be introduced on Pixel devices, providing direct access to the feature. Updates to the home screen widget indicate that Google is focused on integrating AI-powered search while maintaining a familiar user experience.

How AI Mode Differs from Current Search Features

Google Search already incorporates AI in features like AI Overviews, which generate summaries based on search results.

AI Mode is expected to offer a more persistent and interactive space for complex queries. This could be particularly beneficial for users seeking in-depth comparisons, recommendations, or context-driven answers.

For example, test prompts for AI Mode reportedly include:

    • “Compare wool, down, and synthetic jackets in terms of insulation, water resistance, and durability.”
    • “What do I need to get started with aquascaping?” (With a follow-up: “What are some nearby stores to buy supplies?”)
    • “How many boxes of spaghetti should I buy to feed 6 adults and 10 children, and have enough for seconds?”

These types of queries require contextual reasoning, which AI Mode, powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.0, aims to address with deeper insights and interactive responses.

Google’s AI Search Expansion and Industry Competition

The deeper integration of AI into search appears to be a strategic move by Google as competition in AI-driven search intensifies.

While Google’s Gemini and other generative AI chatbots offer conversational capabilities, they have yet to be fully embedded into Google Search.

AI Mode could provide an alternative to third-party AI tools, offering users a more advanced search experience within Google’s ecosystem.

The presence of an AI Mode shortcut in the Pixel Launcher search bar suggests that Google may eventually expand this feature beyond its own devices. However, it remains unclear whether it will be available on other Android devices or remain exclusive to Google’s Pixel lineup.

Expected Release Timeline and Future Developments

Currently, AI Mode is undergoing internal testing among Google employees. While no official release date has been announced, CEO Sundar Pichai has hinted that “2025 is going to be one of the biggest years for Search innovation yet,” suggesting a possible rollout within the year.

Google is also experimenting with AI Mode for desktop search. A potential implementation could involve a dedicated “AI Mode” chip placed alongside existing search filters like Images, News, and Shopping.

If successful, this could mark a shift in how search engines function, making AI-powered interactions a primary method for accessing information.

While details remain limited, the introduction of new shortcuts and interface changes in beta testing suggests that Google is taking steps toward making AI-driven search more accessible.

The presence of “Search Live” in the code hints at the possibility of a more dynamic and conversational search experience, though the final design and functionality may evolve before the official release.
