Google has introduced a new AI-driven feature in Google Classroom that enables educators to generate quizzes and assessment questions using Gemini, the company’s large language model.
Highlights
This update is available exclusively to Google Workspace for Education users with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons.
The feature is designed to help teachers create custom assessments by analyzing instructional content provided by the educator.
Users can either upload materials via Google Drive or enter text manually. Based solely on the provided content, Gemini generates text-dependent questions—ensuring alignment with the source material rather than drawing from external information.
Focus on Content-Aligned Question Generation
By generating questions directly tied to lesson content, the feature ensures that assessments remain relevant to what students have been taught.
This approach supports targeted evaluation of student understanding without introducing unrelated information or requiring external data sources.
Educators can choose from a variety of question formats, including multiple-choice, short response, open-ended, and extended response.
The tool also allows customization of the cognitive skills being assessed, such as analyzing arguments, making inferences, understanding point of view, or evaluating structure and style. Teachers can adjust parameters like grade level and the number of questions prior to generation.
Seamless Integration with Google Tools
Once the questions are generated, they can be exported directly into Google Docs or Google Forms. This allows teachers to distribute assessments through familiar platforms without altering their existing classroom workflows.
The feature is particularly suited for formative assessments or post-lesson evaluations and is designed to save time while maintaining instructional consistency.
Additional AI-Driven Capabilities
In addition to question generation, Gemini also supports other educational tools within Google Classroom:
- Lesson Plan Generation: Helps teachers develop structured plans with defined objectives.
- Vocabulary List Creation: Produces age-appropriate vocabulary sets with definitions and usage examples.
- Text Re-leveling: Adjusts reading material complexity to suit different student reading levels, promoting inclusivity.
These features are part of Google’s broader effort to incorporate AI tools that assist educators with routine content development tasks.
According to Google, all AI interactions are based solely on the input provided by educators, and no unrelated data sources are used, reflecting the company’s commitment to content relevance and user privacy.
Availability and Access
The Ai-powered features are currently being rolled out to Google Workspace for Education users who have access to the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons. The rollout will continue over the coming weeks and is expected to be fully available to eligible users soon.
