Google Launches Doppl, An AI-Powered App for Virtual Outfit Visualization

Google has introduced Doppl, a new experimental app that allows users to visualize how different outfits might look on their own bodies using AI-generated images and animations.

    Highlights

    • What is Doppl? Google’s new experimental app lets users visualize how different outfits might look on their own bodies using AI-generated images and short animations.
    • Personalized Virtual Try-Ons: Users upload a full-body photo, select outfit images from any source—store photos, friend’s wardrobes, social media screenshots—and Doppl generates a custom AI visualization.
    • Dynamic Previews: Beyond static images, users can create short AI-generated videos to see how clothes might look while moving.
    • Flexible Input Sources: It works with a wide variety of input images—including thrift store pics, fashion inspiration from Instagram, or screenshots from online stores—allowing creative outfit visualization.
    • Still Experimental: Released under Google Labs, Doppl is in its early testing phase. Google warns that visualizations may not perfectly represent real-world fit or fabric texture.
    • Feedback-Driven Development: Google is actively collecting user feedback to refine Doppl’s AI models and improve result accuracy.
    • Broader AI Strategy: Doppl represents Google’s next step in blending AI, shopping, and user-generated content—moving beyond static e-commerce tools toward creative, interactive fashion exploration.
    • Availability: Currently limited to U.S. users on both iOS and Android, with no official timeline yet for international rollout.

Available for both iOS and Android users in the U.S., Doppl aims to personalize the virtual try-on experience, moving beyond traditional model-based previews.

    How Doppl Works?

Unlike Google’s earlier virtual try-on tools found in Google Shopping—which showcased clothing on pre-selected models—Doppl creates a digital version of the user. After uploading a full-body photo, users can select outfit images from a variety of sources,

    • Photos taken at stores
    • Friend’s wardrobes
    • Screenshots from social media
    • Online shopping images

The app then generates an AI-rendered visualization of the user wearing the selected outfit.

Beyond static previews, Doppl also allows users to create short AI-generated videos, showing their digital avatar moving in the chosen outfit. This gives users a more dynamic sense of how fabric might flow or how a garment might fit during real-world motion.

    Style Inspiration from Anywhere

One of Doppl’s standout features is its flexibility in handling input images. Users aren’t limited to product catalogs or branded e-commerce photos. The app can process:

    • Images of thrift store finds
    • Friend’s outfits
    • Fashion screenshots from platforms like Instagram or Pinterest

    Early Access via Google Labs

Doppl is currently classified as a Google Labs experiment, signaling that it’s still in a testing and feedback-gathering phase. Google has issued a clear disclaimer: AI-generated results may not always perfectly reflect real-world fit, fabric texture, or clothing details.

The company encourages user feedback to help improve the underlying AI models. These limitations are similar to challenges faced by other early-stage AI visualization tools.

    Positioning

While Doppl’s roots trace back to Google Shopping’s virtual try-on technology, the app is designed to be more interactive and exploratory. Google frames this as a creative fashion sandbox, allowing users to play with different styles, visualize outfit ideas, and even share looks with friends.

This shift toward personalization aligns with Google’s broader push into AI-driven consumer tools, blending shopping, AI, and user-generated content in new ways.

    Availability

For now, Doppl is only available to U.S.-based users, with no confirmed timeline for international expansion.

Future updates may expand functionality, improve visual accuracy, and potentially roll out to more regions based on user engagement and feedback.
