Huawei Could Be Developing a Smartwatch With In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

Huawei, a leader in the wearable technology market, may be working on a smartwatch featuring an in-display fingerprint scanner.

After the successful release of models like the Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro, the company seems focused on integrating advanced biometric technology to redefine user interactions with wearable devices.

Patent Hints at In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

A recent patent filing reportedly spotted by MySmartPrice suggests that Huawei is developing a smartwatch with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

If commercialized, this technology would enable the entire watch display to function as a fingerprint sensor, similar to biometric systems found on many Android smartphones.

3D Fingerprint Scanner With Gesture Support

The patent images reveal a 3D fingerprint scanner capable of capturing a 360-degree fingerprint imprint. This advanced system offers more than just security—it allows users to perform specific actions based on gestures and finger placements.

Potential uses for the 3D scanner include:

    • Thumb: Execute a “back” gesture
    • Index finger: Place calls
    • Middle finger: Close applications
    • Twisting motion: Adjust volume and brightness

Enhanced User Experience and Gesture Controls

Huawei’s patent indicates that the fingerprint scanner would support gesture-based operations, making routine tasks faster and more intuitive. The interactive volume and brightness controls are especially noteworthy:

    • Clockwise twist: Increase volume or brightness
    • Anti-clockwise twist: Decrease volume or brightness

Such capabilities aim to streamline smartwatch interactions without the need to navigate complex menus.

    Security Enhancements for Wearables

Traditional smartwatches typically rely on basic four-digit PINs for security. Huawei’s fingerprint authentication could introduce a more secure method for safeguarding user data. This technology could particularly benefit features like:

    • Contactless payments: Enhanced transaction security
    • Data protection: Improved safety for sensitive information

    Comparison to Smartphone Biometrics

Much like fingerprint sensors on Android smartphones, this technology allows users to register fingerprints by rotating their finger across the display for a full 360-degree capture.

    Impact on the Wearables Market

If Huawei brings this technology to market, it could set a new standard for smartwatch innovation. The combination of gesture-based operations and biometric security features may push competitors to rethink their strategies for wearables.

    Market Implications

Huawei has not confirmed whether the patented technology will be part of its upcoming product releases or if it remains an experimental concept.

Industry analysts view this development as a potential step toward integrating AI-powered and biometric technologies across Huawei’s ecosystem.

Reports of a “landmark” launch later this year, allegedly mentioned in an internal email, have sparked further interest.

If Huawei successfully commercializes the 3D fingerprint scanner, it may trigger a wave of advancements in the wearable tech market, compelling competitors to innovate rapidly.
