Roblox Introduces Open-Source AI Model ‘Cube’ for 3D Object Creation

Roblox has launched Cube, an open-source AI model designed to simplify 3D object creation through text-based prompts.

    Highlights

Open-Source Innovation: Roblox has launched Cube, an open-source AI model that uses text prompts to generate detailed 3D assets, empowering creators both within and outside the platform.
Multimodal Dataset: Cube is built on a diverse dataset combining licensed resources, public 3D assets, and community contributions, ensuring robust 3D mesh generation.
Seamless Integration: The new tool integrates with Roblox Studio, allowing developers to quickly refine AI-generated models and build immersive virtual worlds.
Community-Driven Innovation: By releasing Cube as open-source, Roblox invites external developers to enhance and customize the model, fostering collaborative advancements in AI-driven game development.
Broader Industry Impact: Cube’s approach positions Roblox at the forefront of AI-assisted 3D content creation, with potential implications for game design and virtual world development.

This tool enables developers—both within and outside the Roblox platform—to generate detailed 3D assets with minimal effort.

Cube aligns with Roblox’s broader push toward AI-driven content creation, offering new ways for creators to build immersive virtual worlds.

    Cube’s Functionality and Beta Release

Initially announced at Roblox’s annual developer conference, Cube is now being showcased at the Game Developers Conference (GDC).

Its first major feature, 3D mesh generation, is currently in beta and will be accessible to Roblox creators later this week.

This feature allows users to create meshes (3D representations of objects) simply by describing them in natural language. For example, a prompt like “generate an orange racing car with black stripes” will produce a fully formed 3D model, which can then be refined within Roblox Studio.

Cube functions by tokenizing 3D shapes, predicting, and constructing objects based on these tokens—similar to how text-based AI models generate sentences.

It has been trained using a mix of licensed datasets, publicly available 3D assets, and contributions from the Roblox ecosystem.

    Expanding Beyond Roblox: Open-Source Potential

By making Cube open-source, Company extends its potential beyond its own platform. External developers can modify the model, create custom plugins, or train it with their own datasets, adapting it for various applications.

This positions Roblox alongside other AI-driven gaming innovations, such as Tencent’s recently launched open-source AI model for 3D generation.

Beyond Cube, Roblox is working on additional AI-powered tools to enhance game development. Upcoming features include:

    • Text-to-speech and speech-to-text capabilities to improve accessibility and player interaction.
    • AI-powered NPCs that respond to player dialogue in a more realistic way.
    • Voice command integration for gameplay interactions and in-game narration.

    Future Enhancements: Towards 4D Creation

They plans to expand Cube’s capabilities further. Future updates may introduce:

    • Multimodal inputs, allowing users to generate 3D objects using images or videos.
    • Scene generation, where entire environments can be created from a single prompt (e.g., a forest scene that can be adjusted for different seasons).
    • “4D creation,” where AI-generated objects and environments interact dynamically with players and other game elements.

    Industry Impact and AI Concerns

The integration of AI in game development continues to spark discussion. A recent GDC report found that 30% of game developers believe generative AI could have negative effects on the industry, citing concerns about automation and job security.

A study by CVL Economics suggests that AI advancements could impact or replace 13.4% of gaming jobs by 2026.

Despite these concerns, Roblox sees AI as a tool to empower independent developers and accelerate content creation.

The company has already introduced AI-driven tools for texture generation and avatar creation, and Cube aims to make 3D modeling more accessible for developers of all skill levels.

As AI integration in gaming advances, Cube’s open-source model could encourage broader adoption and innovation, shaping the future of AI-assisted content creation.
