TikTok has announced a series of new accessibility features designed to improve the user experience for individuals with visual impairments and broader accessibility needs.
Highlights
The update was unveiled in recognition of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, observed annually on the third Thursday of May—falling on May 15 this year. These new tools build on TikTok’s existing accessibility options, such as auto-captions, text-to-speech, dark mode, and animated thumbnails.
AI-Generated Alt Text for Greater Visual Access
A key feature in this update is the introduction of artificial intelligence to automatically generate alternative text (alt text) for images.
While users previously had the option to manually add image descriptions to photo posts, this new capability allows AI to create alt text when none is provided.
The goal is to improve accessibility for individuals who are blind, have low vision, or engage with content differently. Screen readers can use these AI-generated descriptions to help users interpret visual content.
Creators retain the ability to review, edit, or customize the alt text after uploading to ensure accuracy and context.
High Contrast Mode to Enhance Visual Clarity
TikTok is also introducing a high contrast mode aimed at users who have difficulty reading standard-contrast text or are sensitive to lower contrast visuals.
When enabled, this feature enhances the visibility of text, icons, and interface elements by increasing their foreground contrast.
The option is available in the app’s settings under the Accessibility section labeled “Increase colour contrast,” and is intended to make content easier to read and navigate for a wider range of users.
Bold Text Support for Consistent Readability
The platform now supports system-wide bold text settings, further aligning the in-app experience with users’ device preferences.
If a user’s device is configured to display bold text, TikTok will mirror that setting across its interface—including captions, usernames, comments, and messages. This change enhances readability for users who rely on bolder fonts and contributes to a more seamless and consistent experience.
A Broader Commitment to Accessibility
In a recent blog post, TikTok reiterated its ongoing commitment to inclusive design. The platform emphasized that accessibility is not just a responsibility but also an opportunity to improve engagement and innovation across its global user base.
“We know that when people feel seen, heard, and supported, they’re empowered to share their stories, create and connect with others in meaningful ways. That’s why we’re focused on continuously building products that serve everyone.”
Recognizing Accessibility Advocates on the Platform
To mark Global Accessibility Awareness Day, TikTok is also spotlighting creators who advocate for disability inclusion and accessibility awareness. Among those featured are:
- @accessbytay (Taylor Lindsay-Noel): An entrepreneur and creator from Toronto who shares content focused on accessibility and disability education.
- @imtiffanyyu (Tiffany Yu): A disability advocate and CEO of Diversability, known for promoting anti-ableism and sharing her personal journey.
- @hunterwoodhall: A Paralympic athlete using his platform to promote inclusivity in sports and amplify the voices of the disabled community.
Accessibility Features Available Now
These new features are included in the latest TikTok update and are available to all users.
The platform’s ongoing investment in accessibility highlights a shift toward more inclusive technology design, aiming to ensure that everyone—regardless of ability—can participate fully in the app’s creative and social ecosystem.
