WhatsApp May Soon Support Motion Photos on Android

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a feature that will enable users to share motion photos in chats, groups, and channels.

    Highlights

Dynamic Motion Photos: WhatsApp is developing a feature that will let users send motion photos—short video clips with audio captured during photo-taking—similar to Apple’s Live Photos and Google’s Top Shot.
Beta Testing Underway: The feature, spotted in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.25.8.12, includes a dedicated motion photo picker button that allows users to choose between sending a motion photo or a static image.
Cross-Platform Compatibility: WhatsApp is working to ensure that motion photos display properly across devices—even on those without native support—enhancing the user experience across platforms.
Enhanced Media Sharing: With the introduction of motion photo support, WhatsApp aims to align with industry trends by offering a more dynamic and interactive way to share images.
No Confirmed Release Date: While the feature is in beta, the final release timeline remains unconfirmed, with early access available through the WhatsApp Beta Program.

The feature, identified in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.8.12, is expected to allow users to send short video clips with audio captured while taking a photo on select Android smartphones.

This functionality is similar to Apple’s Live Photos on iOS and Google’s Top Shot on Pixel devices, offering a more dynamic way to share images.

Motion Photo Support in WhatsApp Beta

According to WABetaInfo, the feature remains under development, but a dedicated motion photo picker button has been spotted in a beta preview.

This button, located near the HD photo option in the media sharing interface, is expected to let users choose between sending an image as a motion photo or as a regular still image.

Currently, when users share motion photos on WhatsApp, they are automatically converted to static images. With this update, the full motion photo experience could be preserved, allowing recipients to view the brief video clip and audio associated with the photo.

    Compatibility Across Devices

Motion photos are already available on various Android smartphones, capturing a short video snippet with audio when a picture is taken.

However, not all devices natively support this format. WhatsApp appears to be working on a solution that would allow recipients to view motion photos even on devices without built-in support.

On iPhones, these motion photos are expected to function as Live Photos, ensuring a seamless cross-platform experience.

    Features and Enhancements

    • Group and Channel Support: The feature is expected to be available not just in private chats but also in groups and WhatsApp Channels, expanding its usability. (Source: Daily Jang)
    • Cross-Platform Compatibility: WhatsApp is working to ensure that motion photos can be viewed on devices that do not natively support the format, providing a more inclusive experience. (Source: Geo News)
    • Enhanced Media Sharing: By incorporating motion photo support, WhatsApp aligns with industry trends seen in other major platforms that prioritize dynamic and interactive media content. (Source: Business News Today)

    Release Timeline and Testing

Since the feature is still in the testing phase, there is no confirmed release timeline. WhatsApp typically introduces new functionalities to beta testers first, followed by a gradual rollout to all users in stable updates.

If testing proceeds smoothly, motion photo support could become widely available in the coming months.

Users interested in early access can join the WhatsApp Beta Program via the Google Play Store to test upcoming features before they are officially released. For broader availability, users are advised to stay updated with WhatsApp’s official announcements.
