WhatsApp has announced a new round of feature updates for both Android and iOS platforms, aimed at enhancing user interactions across private chats, group conversations, video calls, and Channels.
Highlights
The latest rollout introduces several tools designed to make messaging more efficient, personalized, and accessible, with some updates tailored specifically for iOS users.
Group Chat Enhancements and Streamlined Notifications
One of the standout additions is the real-time “Online” status indicator in group chats. This feature allows participants to see who is currently active, making it easier to coordinate conversations or group decisions.
In addition, WhatsApp now offers the ability to limit notifications to highlights—such as mentions, replies, or messages from saved contacts—helping users manage message overload in busy group threads.
Expanded Event Management Capabilities
Event creation, previously limited to group chats, is now available in individual conversations as well.
Users can set start and end times, include a plus-one, select a “Maybe” RSVP option, and pin events within the chat for quick reference. These tools offer greater flexibility for both casual and scheduled planning, supporting a wide range of activities.
More Interactive Chat Reactions
With the new tappable reaction feature, users can now tap on an existing emoji reaction to quickly add the same response—enabling more seamless and expressive participation in group dynamics.
WhatsApp has also introduced a double-tap shortcut for reacting to messages, similar to the feature on Instagram, providing a quicker way to engage without opening the emoji menu.
Channel Updates: Video Notes, Voice Transcripts, and QR Invites
For Channels, WhatsApp now supports short-form video notes of up to 60 seconds. These can be used for updates, previews, or informal communication.
Additionally, voice message transcripts are being rolled out, making audio content more accessible and searchable. Admins also have the ability to invite followers using scannable QR codes, simplifying the process of growing Channel audiences.
New Creative Tools: AI Stickers and Camera Effects
WhatsApp now allows users to create personalized stickers from selfies using an AI-powered tool that detects the subject within an image and automatically generates stickers.
The platform has also expanded its camera effects, introducing over 30 filters, backgrounds, and visual effects to help users customize photos and videos before sharing.
Platform-Specific iOS Features
iPhone users are receiving a few exclusive enhancements. WhatsApp now includes a built-in document scanner, enabling users to scan and send documents without relying on external apps.
Other iOS updates include the ability to pinch to zoom during video calls for a closer view, and the option to add participants to an ongoing one-on-one call directly from the chat by tapping the call icon and selecting “Add to call.”
Meta AI Chatbot Integration
WhatsApp is also introducing Meta AI, a chatbot based on the Llama 3.2 language model. Users can interact with the AI for assistance, content generation, and basic queries, adding another layer of functionality to the platform.
