WhatsApp is testing a new message translation feature in its Android beta version 2.25.12.25. Aimed at streamlining multilingual conversations, the feature allows users to translate messages without relying on external services—while preserving the platform’s end-to-end encryption.
Highlights
The functionality has been in development since July 2024, according to WABetaInfo, and is gradually being rolled out to select beta users.
One of the defining aspects of this feature is its local processing design. Instead of routing messages through Meta’s servers, translations are handled directly on the user’s device.
This local-first approach ensures that the contents of messages remain private and encrypted, as they never leave the device during translation.
Once activated, the translation option appears under the chat lock settings for individual conversations, allowing users to manage it on a per-chat basis.
Users can choose their preferred language from a selection that currently includes Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese (Brazil), Hindi, and Russian. Upon selection, WhatsApp downloads the corresponding language pack to the device, enabling offline translation capabilities.
The feature is turned off by default, giving users full control over whether and where it is used. Users may opt to automatically translate all messages within a conversation or manually translate individual messages using a dedicated Translate button.
All translation settings, including language preferences and downloaded packs, are accessible through the app’s settings.
WhatsApp Features in Development or Testing
- Automatic Language Detection
WhatsApp is working on automatic language recognition, which will identify the language of incoming messages without manual input. This enhancement could simplify the translation experience, particularly in multilingual group chats. - Offline Translation Using Local Language Packs
The translation tool uses downloadable language packs stored locally on the device. This allows translation to occur without requiring an internet connection, helping maintain the app’s privacy and encryption standards. - User-Controlled Preferences
Users retain control over translation behavior. They can enable or disable the feature for specific chats, manage language pack downloads, and choose between automatic or manual translation modes. - Message Labels for Clarity
To help users distinguish between original and translated text, WhatsApp plans to add visual indicators to message bubbles that show when a message has been translated. - Initial Language Support and Planned Expansion
At launch, the feature is expected to support English, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Hindi. WhatsApp has indicated plans to expand language support over time to accommodate a more global user base. - Support Across WhatsApp Channels
The translation tool is being designed for use beyond personal and group chats—it will also function within WhatsApp Channels. This could help users understand channel content in various languages without needing external apps. - Privacy and Security Focus
By keeping all translation processing on-device, WhatsApp emphasizes its commitment to user privacy. This approach aligns with the platform’s broader strategy of developing privacy-first tools that do not compromise encryption protocols.
The feature’s inclusion in the beta version suggests a public rollout may be on the horizon, though no official release date has been confirmed.
Its integration into both chats and channels highlights WhatsApp’s broader aim to enhance user communication across languages while maintaining data protection.
For users in multilingual environments or international communities, the addition of local translation tools could reduce dependence on third-party services and simplify conversations within the app.
