Xiaomi has introduced a new luxury take on its foldable lineup with the Mix Flip 2 Diamond Edition, launched in China.

    Highlights

    • Luxury Twist: Features a Cupid-cut NGTC-certified lab-grown diamond embedded in the middle frame, paired with faux crocodile leather and metal branding.
    • Colors & Pricing: Available in Cherry Red and Glacier White, priced at CNY 6,999 (~₹85,200) — just CNY 500 more than the regular Mix Flip 2.
    • Specs Unchanged: Same as standard Mix Flip 2 — Snapdragon 8 Elite, 6.86-inch foldable AMOLED, 50MP dual cameras, 32MP selfie, and 5,165mAh battery with 67W wired + 50W wireless charging.
    • Exclusivity: Currently sold only in China, positioned as a collector’s edition rather than a performance upgrade.
    • Festival Launch: Debuted during China’s Qixi Festival, framed as a romantic luxury gift option.
    • Market Trend: Taps into the growing lab-grown diamond market, projected to hit $74.5B by 2032, aligning with Asia-Pacific demand.

While the hardware is identical to the standard Mix Flip 2 released in June 2025, this edition distinguishes itself through premium finishes, a symbolic design element, and limited availability.

    A Diamond-Crafted Foldable

At the center of the design is a Cupid-cut lab-grown diamond, certified by the National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC), embedded into the middle frame of the phone.

The handset also features a faux leather back with a crocodile pattern, complemented by a metal Xiaomi nameplate. Buyers can choose between Cherry Red and Glacier White finishes, emphasizing Xiaomi’s push to explore luxury craftsmanship in smartphones.

    Price and Availability

The Diamond Edition is offered in a single 12GB RAM + 512GB storage configuration, priced at CNY 6,999. Currently, it is available exclusively in China via the Xiaomi online store, with no announcements yet on international availability.

    Display and Design

The device mirrors the standard Mix Flip 2, featuring,

    • 6.86-inch 1.5K AMOLED foldable screen with 120Hz refresh rate, 3,200 nits peak brightness, and 300Hz touch sampling rate.
    • 4.01-inch AMOLED cover display, protected by Xiaomi’s Dragon Crystal Glass 2.0.

    Performance and Cameras

The phone runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC with HyperOS 2 (based on Android 15). Key imaging hardware includes:

    • 50MP Light Hunter 800 main sensor with OIS
    • 50MP ultra-wide lens
    • 32MP internal selfie camera

    Battery and Connectivity

The device houses a 5,165mAh battery with 67W wired and 50W wireless fast charging. Other features include Dolby Atmos dual stereo speakers, dual 3D VC cooling, and broad connectivity support (5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou, USB-C).

    Dimensions – 166.89×73.8×7.57mm, Weight: 199g.

    Beyond the Hardware

    Style and Substance

Analysts note that embedding a diamond in a phone can attract attention but risks being perceived as a style-driven move rather than a functional upgrade.

Some suggest Xiaomi could strengthen the messaging by tying the design more closely to themes of sustainability and ethical sourcing, both associated with lab-grown diamonds.

    Pricing Positioning

Interestingly, the Diamond Edition is only CNY 500 (around $70) more expensive than the regular Mix Flip 2. This small premium makes it an accessible luxury option rather than a niche, ultra-high-end product.

    Launch Timing

The device was unveiled during China’s Qixi Festival (a Valentine’s Day equivalent), framing it as a romantic gift option. The red and white finishes reinforce this celebratory appeal.

    Lab-Grown Diamond Growth

The lab-grown diamond market is rapidly expanding, expected to grow from $25.9 billion in 2024 to $74.5 billion by 2032 (CAGR: 14.11%). With the Asia-Pacific region already accounting for over a third of global demand, Xiaomi’s move taps into a strong cultural and economic trend.
