Automattic-Owned Beeper Introduces Redesigned Desktop and iOS Apps

Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, has introduced redesigned desktop and iOS apps for Beeper, the multi-service messaging app it acquired last year for $125 million.

Following its merger with Texts.com, Beeper is rolling out these updates in beta, aiming to improve performance, reduce battery consumption, and enhance security.

The desktop version builds upon the foundation of the Texts.com app, while the iOS version has been developed from scratch.

Beeper states that the new versions offer improved speed and efficiency compared to their predecessors. Users can continue using the old Beeper app, but a streamlined migration process is expected to transition them to the updated versions.

    On-Device Data Storage and Encryption

A major upcoming shift involves how Beeper handles user data. Currently, the app uses Beeper Cloud to store messages and credentials for various messaging services.

Future updates will transition all data storage to the user’s device, eliminating the need for cloud-based storage. This change will also introduce on-device encryption, enhancing user privacy and security.

The new apps will also support multiple accounts for the same messaging service, offering users greater flexibility in managing personal and work conversations.

    Potential iMessage Support on macOS

Beeper has announced plans to introduce iMessage support on Mac, which would allow users to send and receive iMessages directly through the app.

While a timeline for this feature has not been specified, its inclusion could make Beeper a viable option for those looking to consolidate messaging services.

    Leadership Changes and Beeper’s Development

Beeper was founded by Eric Migicovsky, former CEO of Pebble and a partner at Y Combinator. Following Automattic’s acquisition, Migicovsky led Beeper’s development as head of messaging.

However, he recently announced a return to focusing on rebuilding Pebble, marking a leadership shift for Beeper as it moves forward with its expansion.

A Unified Chat Experience Across Multiple Platforms

Beeper integrates over 10 different messaging services, allowing users to manage conversations from platforms such as WhatsApp, Google Messages, and Telegram in a single interface.

The app is available on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS, with a web app reportedly in development.

Users can sync messages across devices, making Beeper a flexible option for those managing multiple chat networks. Unlike many competitors, Beeper focuses solely on chat functionality rather than expanding into social media or broader communication features.

    Enhanced Privacy Through Zero-Access Encryption

One of Beeper’s most significant upcoming changes is the introduction of on-device encryption. By eliminating Beeper Cloud storage, all messages and credentials will be stored locally on a user’s device, improving privacy and security.

Beeper follows a zero-access encryption model, ensuring that even the company cannot access stored messages. Additionally, messages sent via end-to-end encrypted platforms such as Signal and WhatsApp remain encrypted when relayed through Beeper’s bridges.

For users seeking greater control, Beeper offers open-source bridges, allowing self-hosting for those who prefer to manage their own messaging infrastructure.

    Multi-Account Support and Future Expansion

Beeper is working on features that will allow users to manage multiple accounts within the same chat network, which could be useful for those who need to keep personal and professional communications separate while maintaining access in a single interface.

Additionally, iMessage support for macOS remains in development. If successfully implemented, this could provide a third-party alternative for accessing iMessage outside of Apple’s ecosystem.

    Business Model

Beeper is currently free to use, but the company plans to introduce a paid subscription for additional premium features.

While the pricing structure has not yet been detailed, the paid plan is expected to include functionalities such as multi-account support per chat network and advanced tools for power users.

Unlike other messaging platforms that rely on advertising or data monetization, Beeper’s revenue model focuses on subscriptions, ensuring privacy remains a priority. The free plan will continue to offer core messaging features, with premium subscriptions helping to sustain the service.

    User Feedback and Reporting Issues

Beeper encourages user feedback to improve its service. Users can report bugs or suggest features directly within the app:

    • Desktop: Press ⌘+⇧+P (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or navigate to All Chats → Report a Problem.
    • iOS: Shake the device or go to Settings → Report a Problem.

The transition to on-device encryption, potential iMessage support, and expanded network compatibility signal its efforts to enhance user control and security. More updates are expected in the coming months as Beeper refines its offerings.
