WhatsApp is reportedly developing a feature for its iOS app that could allow users to add Instagram profile links to their accounts.
According to WABetaInfo, this feature is currently in development and was spotted in the latest beta version of the app.
If implemented, it could provide users with a more streamlined way to display their social media presence directly within WhatsApp. However, the feature is not yet available for beta testers.
Feature Details and Implementation
The feature was identified in WhatsApp for iOS beta version 25.2.10.72, accessible through Apple’s TestFlight beta program.
Early indications suggest that users may be able to add Instagram links through a new “Add Links” section within their profile settings.
A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo shows a plus icon that users can tap to manually enter their Instagram username, which would then be displayed on their WhatsApp profile.
At this stage, there is no authentication requirement for linking an Instagram account, meaning users can input any username without verification.
This raises potential concerns regarding identity misrepresentation and privacy. It remains unclear whether WhatsApp will introduce an authentication mechanism before the feature is rolled out more widely.
Integration with Other Social Media Platforms
For now, adding Instagram links is expected to be optional, allowing users to decide whether they want to integrate their social media profiles. A similar feature already exists for WhatsApp Business accounts, but business users must authenticate their Instagram profiles before linking them.
While the feature currently focuses on Instagram, there is speculation that WhatsApp may extend it to include other Meta-owned platforms, such as Facebook and Threads.
However, there is no confirmation on whether third-party platforms like X (formerly Twitter) or Snapchat will be supported.
Social Media Links in User Profiles
Once added, social media links will be displayed on a user’s WhatsApp profile alongside their name, phone number, and “About” section.
This could make it easier for contacts to access a user’s Instagram page with a single tap. Privacy settings for this feature are expected to follow existing WhatsApp controls, allowing users to manage who can view their linked accounts.
Potential Authentication Measures
Currently, WhatsApp Business accounts require authentication before social media links are displayed.
However, for personal accounts, the beta version allows Instagram links to be added without verification.
This could raise concerns about misuse and impersonation, making it possible that WhatsApp will introduce a verification step before the official rollout.
Expected Rollout Timeline
As the feature is still in development, it is unclear when it will be officially released. However, past beta tests suggest that public rollouts often follow within a few weeks of testing.
Users will have full control over whether to use this feature, as it is expected to be an optional addition.
